Black Butte (10 miles)
Broken Top (10 miles)
Fish Lake Historic Site (1 mile) *
This is definitely one of those Sunday afternoon rambles with the kids, with an opportunity to catch up on some Oregon pioneer history along the way. Winter’s really the only time to see Fish Lake anyway, since in the summer the darned thing often dries up completely. But in late winter it’s a lovely 1-mile-long lake that you can certainly loop around. If you’re going to make this a stop on a trip between Bend and Eugene be sure to get a look at the old cabins and structures that date back well into the nineteenth century.

Hayrick Butte (4 miles)
Isaac Nickerson Loop (4 miles) *
The Ikenick Sno-Park, whose name is a marginally clever short form of the name Isaac Nickerson, accesses some great, well-marked beginner loops. There’s even the prospect of a skier–snowshoers’ shelter getting built on this particular loop. Until then, the best part of this trail, which you can do in about 2 hours, is a view of the Three Sisters mountains, which is worth putting on the cover of a scenic calendar. Rarely do you get such a perfectly framed view of those three beautiful mountains. That also gives you a hint of why the forest service and local touring groups plan to put a shelter here.

Maxwell Butte (8 miles)
Old McKenzie Pass (Highway 242) (12.5 miles)
Potato Hill (4 miles)
Prairie View Loop (5.5 miles) *
This is a good trail to take some snowshoe “newbies,” or beginners, on because of the negligible elevation gain, moderate terrain, and impressive views of the surrounding Oregon peaks. Also, even though the views of the mountains are at times stunning, you’re never far from the highway if things go wrong for some reason. The Prairie View Loop is one of those routes that makes good use of some haphazard land management. The route weaves in and out of clear cuts and regrowing logged areas and also uses logging roads for some of the trails.
